Gurgaon or Gurugram: Which Name Should Your Website Use?
Author
By, Author Gurjind Singh

Should your business website say Gurgaon or Gurugram? The official name and the words your customers search for are related, but they are not the same decision. Changing every mention, creating two location pages or renaming a Google Business Profile just to match a keyword can create more work without solving the underlying visibility problem.

The short answer: use Gurugram for the official location, and include Gurgaon naturally where it helps customers recognise the place or matches the language of a service page. Keep one useful page for the same service and location. Do not change an established URL solely because it contains Gurgaon.

Below, we compare actual Brainvative Search Console query data, explain the limitations, and turn the evidence into a practical naming checklist. This is a study of our website, not a city-wide keyword-volume survey.

What is the official name: Gurgaon or Gurugram?

The district administration uses Gurugram on its official website. Its About District page is a primary source for the current district name. Gurgaon also appears in the historical account. That does not mean businesses must replace every historical reference or every familiar search phrase.

For a business, separate three things: the official place name in factual information, the registered or real-world business name, and the wording used to describe services. A service heading is not a legal address field, and a search query is not an instruction to rename your business.

Our research: how both names appear in Search Console

We reviewed Brainvative's Google Search Console property for 5 July 2025 to 2 November 2026, using Web search, all countries and all devices. We applied separate query-contains filters for Gurgaon and Gurugram. The figures below sum the returned query rows; the accompanying screenshots show the corresponding filtered reports.

The important detail: branded and service searches differ

Of the 306 impressions in the Gurugram query rows, 302 came from two searches containing Brainvative's name. The remaining four were non-branded. Comparing the overall totals without this distinction would mix people looking for a known business with people looking for a service provider.

This is why we do not use the totals to declare one city spelling the winner. A business should compare the same service, landing page and reporting settings, while keeping branded searches separate.

Illustrative examples: interiors and tutoring

The following examples explain how to organise a comparison for other businesses. They are illustrative keyword pairs, not measured queries or ranking results from our study.

Maths tutoring servicemaths tutor in Gurgaonmaths tutor in GurugramThe same subject, teaching format and intended student audience.

An interior studio could use a clear heading such as "Home Interior Design in Gurgaon" and explain naturally in its introduction that it serves homes in Gurugram. It would not need a second near-identical page just to use the other name. A tutoring business should similarly keep subject-specific services distinct from city-spelling variations.

What this evidence can and cannot tell you

Our data supports keeping Gurgaon in the vocabulary of relevant service content while recognising Gurugram as the official name. It does not prove that one spelling always ranks better. Our existing content, rankings and site history influence the queries for which we receive impressions.

Search Console is not a complete keyword-demand database. Some queries are withheld for privacy, and query-filtered figures have limitations. Impressions are not unique people, enquiries or completed sales. All-country results also do not establish that every searcher was physically in the city. Google's Performance report documentation explains its metrics and query reporting constraints.

Where should you use each name on your website?

Make each field do its job. Readers need clarity and accurate business information, not repeated city variations in every sentence. The examples below are suggested wording, not claims about a measured ranking improvement.

Website elementPractical approach
Page title and H1Choose one clear service-and-location phrase. An established Gurgaon service page can keep Gurgaon; there is no need to force both names into every heading.
Opening paragraphClarify the alternative once, for example: "Our Gurugram (Gurgaon) team works with local businesses." Only claim a local team if you genuinely have one.
Address and contact detailsUse accurate, complete details consistent with your real location and business records. Do not invent an office in a targeted area.
Existing URLKeep a working, relevant URL unless there is a separate reason for a migration. A city spelling alone is not a reason to create a replacement.
Internal link textUse a natural description of the destination, such as "our home interior design services", rather than a list of city-keyword variants.
Image alt textDescribe the image accurately. Add a place name only when it helps explain what is pictured, not to repeat a target phrase.

For an interior business, residential design and office fit-outs may deserve separate pages when the services, process and project evidence genuinely differ. Gurgaon and Gurugram alone do not create that distinction. When planning a business website, organise pages around useful services and customer needs rather than spelling variations.

Do you need separate Gurgaon and Gurugram pages?

For the same service, business and customer need, our recommendation is one substantial page. Explain the service, actual coverage, process, evidence and next step there. Mention the alternative city name where it helps understanding.

Google identifies doorway abuse as pages created for similar queries that funnel people toward essentially the same destination. Its spam policies also address keyword stuffing. Two pages are not automatically a violation, but copying a page and swapping the city spelling gives visitors little additional value.

If both variants already exist, first compare their content, links and search performance. Do not delete or redirect a useful page blindly. Where pages genuinely duplicate each other, choose the appropriate preferred URL and plan consolidation carefully. Google's canonicalisation guidance explains how duplicate URLs can be consolidated; a canonical is not a substitute for building a useful page.

Should you change your Google Business Profile name?

Not simply to add Gurgaon, Gurugram or an SEO keyword. Google's Business Profile guidelines require a name that reflects the business as it is represented in the real world, alongside accurate address or service-area information.

Keep the business identity factual. Use the appropriate profile fields to describe your location and services. Do not create a second profile merely to cover the alternative spelling. For a wider maintenance checklist, see our Google Business Profile optimisation guide.

How to run this comparison for your own business

  1. Choose a complete reporting period. Record the exact dates, search type, country and device settings so both filters are comparable.
  2. Filter queries containing Gurgaon. Export the available query rows and note the landing pages receiving visibility.
  3. Repeat with Gurugram. Keep all other settings unchanged. Do not compare a recent month against a year.
  4. Separate your brand name from service searches. A search for your business name has a different intent from a general service search. For example, "maths tutor in Gurugram" describes a service need rather than a named provider.
  5. Compare like-for-like services. Review corresponding phrases and pages, not only overall totals. Check whether one spelling is barely represented in your current content.
  6. Review the landing page itself. Is it indexable, clear and credible? Does it demonstrate the service and give visitors a relevant contact option?
  7. Track outcomes separately. Use correctly configured analytics and enquiry records to assess business value. A search impression alone is not a lead.

Our Search Console troubleshooting guide covers the broader investigation. You can also use the SEO checker to inspect on-page signals, but a technical score cannot establish city-wide demand or guarantee indexing.

What matters more than swapping the city name?

A page needs a reason to be useful beyond its location keyword. Show work that relates to the service, explain who delivers it, describe genuine coverage, and make the next step clear. Use client evidence only with permission, with dates and enough context to understand what the result measures.

For an actual local business, accurate contact information and a clear service explanation are more helpful than a paragraph listing every sector and neighbourhood. If you serve the city remotely, say so rather than implying a physical office. If your page is not indexed, investigate its content, canonical, crawlability and discovery before assuming the spelling is responsible.

A practical decision checklist

  • Use Gurugram when identifying the official location.
  • Keep Gurgaon where it is natural and supported by your audience's language.
  • Cover both names on one relevant service page without repetitive wording.
  • Keep existing valuable URLs stable; assess duplicates before consolidating.
  • Separate branded searches, service queries and enquiry outcomes in reporting.
  • Document any changes and compare subsequent complete periods, allowing for other site changes and seasonality.
  • Do not promise rankings or indexing from a name change.

Our conclusion: this is not a contest in which one spelling must disappear. Use the official name accurately, acknowledge the familiar name naturally, and focus the page on the customer's actual service need. Brainvative's own data is a useful example of why query intent matters more than a headline comparison of two totals.

Frequently Asked Questions

The district administration uses Gurugram. Gurgaon remains a familiar name that appears in search queries. Use accurate official location information and include the familiar name naturally where it helps readers.

Not solely because of the spelling. Review the existing page, links and performance before planning any URL change. A stable relevant URL can cover both names in its content.

Usually not for the same service and customer need. One substantial page can explain both names. Separate pages should have genuinely distinct purposes, not simply swapped city wording.

No. It shows reported visibility and clicks for Brainvative during the specified period. It is affected by the website content and rankings, and some query data is withheld for privacy.

No. A city-name change does not guarantee indexing or rankings. Review the page content, technical signals and internal discovery as part of a broader investigation.
