Website owners assume search engines see the same experience as visitors just because their website looks good and works well. While a website provides users with an enjoyable, reliable, and productive experience, Google (and other search engines) sees those same elements differently. Your visitors interact with and receive information through the content on the page, whereas Google sees and evaluates the underlying signals of the website, which include crawlability, server response codes, mobile rendering, canonicalization, page relationships, and duplicate content patterns.

Trust is measured in two distinctly different ways:

Website trust is shaped by how it appears to visitors—through design, copywriting, and brand familiarity—and by how reliable it seems to Google, based on backlinks, content consistency, authority signals, domain history, and security.

A visitor may feel confident in trusting a website; however, Google might not perceive the same level of confidence due to its potential lack of authority signals. If Google doesn't have external validation of a website's topical focus and consistency, it will be unlikely to rank that website competitively even if visitors believe it is trustworthy.

Engagement signals are interpreted, not observed

First: While visitors consciously engage with content by reading and clicking through the content, Google doesn't “see this behavior directly. Google infers engagement through website visitor behavior trends (for example, dwell time trends, repeat visit behavior, and search behavior loops), rather than direct observations of individual users.

Second: When a user quickly returns to the search result list or refines their search query, this indicates that the user is unhappy with the results they received. Poor website design/content hurts rankings even if users don't complain.

Final considerations

Google experiences websites differently than a human does; it doesn't see "pretty, emotional, or persuasive" things. Rather, Google sees patterns, structures, signals, and consistency in website content. People, on the other hand, respond to "clarity," "trust," and "convenience."

For a website to be successful, it must effortlessly merge these two different perspectives.

So, if you are a website owner, you must design it for people and yet have the proper format and structure to work well with search engines.

When both of these perspectives work together, a website will get the benefit of increased credibility, visibility, and interaction. When these two perspectives don't work together, a well-designed website has difficulty gaining traction.
